Respect for the Government
(Fragment)
January 24 or 25, 1935
What does Jesus tell us: You are one body; you are of one spirit, and this spirit is love; that is why you do not avenge yourselves; that is why your only weapons are the weapons of light and love. You live in the dominion of a "Roman" world power. Show your love to those who represent the government. You are not to take revenge but to meet the authorities with love.
Then, too, pray for the government [1.Tim. 2:1-2]. It is utterly different from the Body of Christ, but it too serves God, though in a completely different sphere. The authorities are necessary; crime could not be kept under any kind of control without them. So you should recognize governmental authority but not become part of it. You are members of Christ, and Christ specifically rejected becoming a ruler. When they wanted to make him a king, he escaped [John 6:15]. And when the tempter came to him and said, "Here, I will give you all the kingdoms of the world," he refused [Matt.4:8-10]. But he treated the authorities with respect.
Whoever is a member of Christ's Body . . . . And toward the government: In all things act in love. Government is a historic necessity.
We are not children of vengeance but children of love. Therefore we should show the authorities nothing but love, and there is no such thing as love without respect. In history there is wrath. Our place is not under the hand of wrath but in the heart of his love.
. . . This is what we say: If two people have different tasks, what they do will be different. The task of the government is completely different from that of a Christian. Whoever takes on the task of a Christian cannot do what the government does. Whoever takes on a government task cannot do what Christ does, otherwise Jesus would have been a Roman emperor or a leader of the people of Israel. Yet this is just what he refused to be when the devil tempted him.
These are two completely different callings, which cannot be mixed or commingled. Thus if you take upon yourself a government calling [meaning: if you give your allegiance to the government], then be a soldier. But do not say you are following Christ. Or if you follow the call of Christ, you cannot "follow" the government and become a soldier. These are two different callings.
