What is Jesus Doing Now?
Alte Promenade 8
February 29, 1912
Everyone recognizes Jesus as his example. Men speak of him as the greatest man. They used to call our age irreligious. "But never except in the first centuries has man's interest centered so passionately upon the person of Jesus as in the last eighty years," said Chamberlain. "The works of Darwin were not bought one tenth as much as those of Strauss and Renan" (as above) concerning Jesus. In spite of all attempts of different kinds, we have recognized more and more clearly: "No human author can invent a Jesus Christ." "The rise of Christianity can be explained only through the unprecedented impression that this one personality--Jesus--had upon his surroundings, and left behind him." "No man ever spoke like this man, and none has spoken like him since"--just that is the confession of modern man. Yes, Chamberlain calls out in an outburst of deep emotion, "The appearance of Jesus Christ signifies the appearance of a new mankind." "Christ signifies the morning of a new day. He has won a new youth for all mankind." "No one who has once seen Jesus can forget Him." "No chaos of the world's bustle and stress, no delirium of self-seeking, no manipulation of thought can efface the once seen figure of the man of sorrows."
These are the words of one of the most modern men, who, in spite of his confessed dilettantism, has listened to and understood the heartbeat of the people of today as perhaps no other man.
But, ladies and gentlemen, we must draw a clear boundary line, it is our duty to draw your attention to the gulf that divides people here.
What good is it to us to be enthusiastic about the historical Jesus? What good is it if we regard Him as the greatest human being and the deepest child of God?
What good is it to us if our Jesus belongs to the past? At that rate the New Testament means no more to us than Goethe's Faust. (P.Decke's statement). Then Jesus means no more to us than Socrates and Plato, Goethe and Shakespeare, Frederick the Great, and Bismarck. Then we are only living from his ideas, his thoughts, from the past. One thing is decisive as answer to the question: Are we Christians or not?
What is Jesus doing now?
What does he mean to us today?
We are people of the present. We need a Jesus of the present!! Or everything is an illusion. Everything has been for nothing. We need a Christ who is alive, who is present, and who is working today, and just today. Otherwise we have nothing but a phantom, nothing but a shadow, nothing but an idea, nothing but an idol: we have been deceived in everything.
What is Jesus to us today? That is the question.
What is Jesus doing now?
In the last meetings we also stood under the powerful impression of the personality of Jesus: he stood out before us as the one and only one who lived out what He wanted and proclaimed. He has given us an example of what it means when God reigns, when we have Him as our Father and trust Him as our Father!
His death actually proved to be the greatest deed of His life: the death of the only completely pure human being in place of the human race, the suffering of the Son of God, the atonement for our sins, the moral conquest over the princes of the world and thus the dawn of God's reign.
In our last meeting we were under the overwhelming impact of the historically genuine testimony: The grave is empty! He has not remained dead! The Crucified One is alive!
And the whole of original Christianity stands before us as the united, historical witness to the power of God that was bound to lie in this fact:
Jesus Christ proved with power through the resurrection as Son of God (Rom. 1:4 free)! Blessed be God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has given us new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Pet. 1:3 free). To know Him and the power of His resurrection, that is the aim in life of living members of original Christianity.
B. Jesus is alive. Jesus is living today! That is the source of the power and certainty of true Christianity. That alone is also the explanation of the historical might of the Christian Movement, especially in its very beginnings at the time of the apostles.
I. "Jesus has left those who are His own a two-fold testament on earth."
l. "I am with you always, even to the end of the world." (Matt.28:20)
"Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them." (Matt.18:20)
"For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sinning. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace in time of need." (Heb. 4:l5,16)
"For because he himself has suffered and been tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted." (Heb. 2:18)
2. "Now I am going to him who sent me . . .because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convince the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment; of sin, because they do not believe in me; of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you ... (John 16:5 ff).
Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the ruler of this world be cast out; and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself. He said this to show by what death he was to die . . .(John 12:31-33).
The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom (2 Cor. 3:17).
Christ in you! Not I, but Christ in me (Gal. 2:20).
II He has a twofold activity with his Father:
1. My children, I am writing this to you so that you may not sin; but if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, and he is the expiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world . . . (1 John 2:l,2).
Here is One who, "because he lives forever, possesses a priesthood that needs no successor. This means that he can save fully and completely those who approach God through him, for he is always living to intercede on their behalf."
2. The doing of the service now: The building up of the Body of Christ (Heb.1:).
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, where each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and builds up itself in love (Eph. 4:15,16).
"Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way where I am going" (John 14:1-4).
"Father, I desire that they also, whom thou hast given me, may be with me where I am, to behold my glory which thou hast given me in thy love for me before the foundation of the world" (John 17:24).
C.
Conclusion:
"When I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all men to myself" (John 12:32).
The Word is near you ! (Rom.10:8).
He who believes in his heart will be saved (Rom. 10:9).
Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved (Rom.10:13).

Was tut Jesus jetzt?

Was tut Jesus jetzt?
Was tut Jesus jetzt?
- - -
B. Jesus lebt! Jesus lebt heute!
- - -
Was tut Jesus jetzt?
II. Er hat eine doppelte Tätigkeit beim Vater:
1.)
2.) Das Werk des Dienstes jetzt: Die Auferbauung des Leibes Christi.
<vater,></vater,>
