It Depends on You!
Fragment--ca. 1932
[When a novice asked to go to see the fine German castles and then return, Eberhard called the brotherhood together in the afternoon to say the following.]
The witness of the church community is the witness to God's love, which shines as the light of the City on the Hill into all the slums of all the cities.
Now, how can one think of wanting to see beautiful buildings? The essential thing is--are you surrendered with your whole will to Christ's love or not, and for that you are responsible. It depends on you now! Your cause is at stake; it is your cause when the cause of the church community is at stake.
This must be spoken deep into his heart in order that he senses the Holy Spirit's love, Christ's glowing warmth, Christ's light.

“Auf dich kommt es an!”
[Als ein Novize bat, sich die schönen deutschen Burgen und Schlösser anzusehen und dann wiederzukommen, rief Eberhard die Bruderschaft am Nachmittag zusammen, um dies zu sagen:]
Das Zeugnis der Gemeinde ist das Zeugnis der Liebe Gottes, welches hineinleuchtet als Licht der Stadt auf dem Berge in alle Elendsviertel aller Grossstädte.
Wie kann man jetzt daran denken, dass man sich schöne Bauten ansehen will? Es kommt darauf an, ob du mit deinem ganzen Willen der Liebe Christi hingegeben bist oder nicht, und dafür bist du verantwortlich. Auf dich kommt es an, auf dich! Um deine Sache geht es, um deine Sache handelt es sich, wenn es um die Gemeindesache geht.
Das müsste sehr tief ins Herz gesprochen werden, dass er die Liebe des heiligen Geistes spürt, die Glut Christi, das Licht Christi!
