Eberhard gives a summary of the situation in Europe April 10, 1934
The tasks given to Eberhard, Emmy, and Adolf
Adolf's tasks: Relocation of the publishing house to be confirmed. Forms to be obtained for applying for relocation and for having it confirmed.
Proper bookselling permits to be obtained from the aliens' police office in Zurich.
Money to be raised for a carpenter's (or planing) bench. 800 Swiss francs to be raised for a repayment to be made in May to the Brothers of the Common Life. Intensive fund raising campaign for furniture, household goods, and tools.
Adolf is given the task of raising 500 1000 Swiss francs through sales and large scale Franciscan begging.
Emmy, together with Eberhard, intends to call on the Liechtenstein government, the head of the school department, and Frau Spurry, the latter to be made interested in our products, which Eberhard and Emmy want to take along.
Eberhard gives an overview of the situation in Europe.
All our recent moves have been occasioned by the European situation. One gets the impression that in the last weeks things have been going downhill in the German Reich, in particular the financial and labor situation. The gold reserves of the German mark have been melting away; there are grave export problems and difficult negotiations with England, Holland, and Switzerland as regards debt repayments. Inflation and deflation loom as possibilities; Schacht is alone in offering resistance. In place of inflation Hitler has spoken of a prospective slashing of wages. The production of armaments is to be increased considerably. These are very bad prospects. The workers are said to be turning against the government, and so do the farmers on account of the Erbhofgesetz [law establishing inalienable, entailed farms of not more than 125 hectares], for it provokes dissent in families, and the farmer no longer feels a free man.
The religious situation in Germany
Antagonism between Roman Catholics and Protestants is being greatly aggravated. The pope calls upon the bishops to fiercely resist the pagan Germanic religious wave in order to protect the Catholic youth. The Catholic bishops in Germany have begun to speak out sharply and to protest. Rosenberg has taken up the gauntlet, proclaiming that Germany, not yet bereft of dreams, has power to create a myth a myth finding fulfillment in Hitler. But the dreaming is still going on. Rosenberg's myth (The Myth of the 20th Century) wants to revive ancient Germanism, declaring Christianity to be a Jewish idea. Rosenberg rises up against the bishops. He is boss of the whole intellectual and cultural life in Germany. Even more sharply than Rosenberg, Schirach has spoken out against the pope, seeing that Catholic youth groups are still in existence. He says: "There are still Christian youth groups that imagine they have a right to exist. Only the Hitler Youth has that right." That breaches Papen's concordat with the pope. The Catholic Church is in turmoil, and the will to resist is strong. Catholic priests are being attacked on account of allusions to the "pagan" regime they are said to have woven into their sermons. But the Catholic Church is still holding together.
It is being said that hundreds of Protestant pastors want to turn Catholic with their congregations to form a fighting front against the present Protestant Church and Ludwig Müller. 2,000 Protestants are said to have converted already. At the beginning of the year the Protestant bishop of Bavaria promised not to oppose Müller. Now he declares that while Ludwig Müller heads up the Protestant Church, there is no longer any reformation, for the church has to take up the struggle against Müller's rule. Things are moving ahead in the Pfarrernotbund [Ministers' Emergency League] too. Müller has imposed ministers on congregations by force.
The struggle about rearmament and disarmament is going on everywhere. There is a terrible situation all around us. Our little enterprise has a tremendous task: Complete unity must be established and maintained.

Bruderschaft am 10. April 1934 abends.
Zunächst Eberhards, Emmys und Adolfs auszuführende Unternehmungen:
Adolf: Die Verlagsniederlassung soll bestätigt werden.
Das Niederlassungsgesuch und seine Bestätigung soll erlangt werden.
In der Fremdenpolizei Zürich sollen die richtigen Papiere für den Buchhandel erlangt werden.
Werbung einer Hobelbank. Erwerbung von 800 Franken für die Brüder des gemeinsamen Lebens, die im Mai fällig sind.
Großer Haus- und Warenbettel. Werkzeuge.
Adolf erhält den Auftrag, durch Verkauf und franziskanischen Großbettel 500-1000 Franken beizubringen.
Emmy beabsichtigt mit Eberhard:
Die Regierung, den Schulchef und Frau Spurry zu besuchen. Diese soll für unsere Sachen interessiert werden, die Eberhard und Emmy mitnehmen wollen.
Eberhard: Ausblick auf die europäische Lage:
Alle unsere Unternehmungen der letzten Zeit sind aus der europäischen Lage hervorgegangen.
Man hat den Eindruck, dass es in den letzten Wochen im Deutschen Reich bergab geht, im besonderen mit der Geld- und Arbeitslage. Die Golddeckung der Mark ist zurückgeschmolzen, die Schwierigkeiten im Export sind groß. Von Seiten Englands, Hollands und der Schweiz werden schwierige Verhandlungen geführt wegen der Schuldenzahlung.

Die Möglichkeit einer Inflation und Deflation steht allen vor Augen. Nur Schacht leistet Widerstand. Anstelle der Inflation hat Hitler Lohnsenkungen in Aussicht gestellt. Die Rüstungsindustrie soll erheblich gesteigert werden. Sehr böse Aussichten. Die Stimmung der Arbeiter soll sich gegen die Regierung wenden, auch die Stimmung der Bauern wegen des Erbhofgesetzes, denn es bringt Familienzwistigkeiten und der Bauer empfindet, dass er keine Freiheit mehr hat.
Die religiöse Lage in Deutschland.
Die Gegensätze zwischen Katholiken und Protestanten verschärfen sich sehr. Der Papst fordert die Bischöfe auf zu stärkstem Widerstand gegen die heidnisch-germanische religiöse Welle, auch zum Schutz der katholischen Jugend. Die katholischen Bischöfe haben eine scharfe Sprache in Deutschland angeschlagen, sie erheben Protest. Rosenberg nimmt den Fehdehandschuh auf. (Rosenberg: Deutschld. hat noch nicht ausgeträumt, und solange hat es Kraft zum Mythos, den Hitler erfüllt: Trotzdem aber geht das Träumen weiter. Der Mythos soll das Germanentum neu aufleben lassen. Das Christentum ist ein jüdischer Gedanke. ((Mythos des 20. Jahrh.)) ). Rosenberg empört sich gegen die Bischöfe. Er ist Kulturchef des gesamten geistigen Lebens und Kulturlebens in Deutschland. Schirach hat noch schärfer als Rosenberg gegen den Papst geredet, weil es noch katholische Jugendgruppen gibt. Er sagt: Es gibt noch christliche Jugendgruppen, die meinen, ein Recht auf Existenz zu haben. Nur die Hitlerjugend hat ein Recht zur Existenz. Damit ist Papens Vertrag mit dem Papst gebrochen. In der katholischen Kirche ist Aufregung und starker Wille zum Widerstand. Katholische Priester sind angegriffen wegen

Anspielungen auf das „heidnische“ Regime, die sie in ihre christlichen Reden eingeflochten haben sollen. Die katholische Kirche steht noch zusammen. Man hört die Nachricht, dass Hunderte von evangelischen Pastoren katholisch werden wollen mit ihren Gemeinden, als Kampffront gegen die jetzige evangelische Kirche und Ludwig Müller. 2000 Protestanden sollen schon übergetreten sein. Der evangelische Bischof von Bayern hat am Jahresanfang versprochen, nicht gegen Ludwig Müller zu stehen. Jetzt erklärt er: solange L. Müller in der evangelischen Kirche stünde, würde es keine Reformation mehr geben, denn sie müsste gegen die Machtherrschaft Müllers kämpfen. – Im Pfarrernotbund geht es auch weiter. Müller hat Zwangs-Pfarrer eingesetzt.
Rüstungs-und Abrüstungskampf von allen Seiten. Es ist eine furchtbare Lage um uns. Unser kleines Werk hat eine gewaltige Aufgabe: die vollkommene Einheit muss hingestellt und erhalten werden.
