Matthew Chapter 10. (9.1.35)
The peace of God as perfect unity, and the Love of God as perfect joy, and the strength of the Holy Spirit as the new preparation of his Church, be with us.
We are again gathered together to be strengthened by the Word, and to be empowered for mission to the whole world; for the establishing and maintaining the service of the Word in our midst, and for the awakening of true testimony in the whole Church. We will read this extract from Matthew Chapter 10, and the words concerning mission spoken by Jesus.
But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils, and in their synagogues they will scourge you. Yea and before governors and Kings shall ye be brought, for my sake, for a testimony to them, and to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, be not anxious how or what ye shall speak, for it shall be given you in that hour, what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father, that speaketh in you. And brother shall deliver up brother to death, and the father his child; and children shall rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men, for my name's sake; but he that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved. But when they persecute you in this city, flee to the next, for verily I say unto you Ye shall not have gone through the cities of Israel, till I the Son of Man be come.
A disciple is not above his master, nor a servant above his Lord. It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his Lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household! Fear them not therefore.
That which we heard and experienced in our last two meetings is the basis of the persecution, of which we now hear. This extract from Jesus' missionary words, in the 10th Chapter according to the Gospel of Matthew, is so very important for a servant of the Word, because it makes clear that the ideal of heroism, is not the picture of Jesus Christ. The readiness for flight is not at all in accord with the heroic ideal, as is fashionable and customary today. Yet it is the way of true manliness and objectivity, for here truth is glorified and every superfluous enlarging of man is avoided. Just as Jesus said to those he healed "Tell it no man, that ye are healed of me" so also he does not wish that his servants and Church seek to become famous Martyrs, of whom it is told what great heroes they were in death. Certainly, they must be prepared to die for the sake of the witness, but it should be as unassuming as possible, and the truth solely represented. It does not matter if one or the other dies a Martyr's death, we decline to praise him then. On the contrary, when the hero is honored, the truth is reduced. The important thing is that the truth is testified to, unbroken and unchanged, by the servant who is sent out, even if he be put to death; that till to the end he represents the Truth, not weakened or exaggerated without addition or subtraction, and quite clearly in love. Only through this is his martyrdom consecrated, through the objective loyalty and modesty in the representation of the Truth. That is a very deep lesson, and not every one will immediately understand that Jesus expressly says "Flee from one land into another." The whole attitude of the Church hangs together with this. If we have no permanent place, no permanent Bruderhof in any country, but are always prepared for flight, then we cannot cling to property, nor think we have a good place in the work department we have just taken over, then we will be prepared to do the lowest service, like Jesus, and not consider whether we have a specially fruitful or successful place of work but we will be prepared to clean shoes all day long, or over and over again, take another job. We will be prepared, in work as in a Church service, to be moved around, even as our whole life is a pilgrimage.
We must be clear that especially a servant of the Word must in no way become more than that which Jesus lived and demonstrated. He would be no true servant, whose name is not dishonored, who is not deeply insulted. Thus it happened to Jesus, so it should happen to the servants of the Word. All the less reason have we to fear, for we see we are on the right way, and it will be shown us what we have to do. Therefore we need not worry. We need not fear. A comfort is given to us. The Son of Man is coming, the hour is near, when he will come again. We shall not finish our proclamation, we shall not have traversed all of the [our] planet, and Jesus will be there. Our pilgrimage will stretch from Germany to England, from England to America, to Japan and Russia, and back again to Germany. While we are thus traveling, Jesus will be there not for our small brotherhood, but for the whole of Christianity. The mission to all nations will not be finished. It is such a short space of time during which the Church will not be finished with the 2 million beings, with the continents of this planet. In China and Africa, are territories where no missionary has ever been. If we regarded all missionaries as disciples of Christ, then still this mission of which we speak, would not be fulfilled, for even today it has not penetrated to all Nations and planets: It will not be finished, and the hour will arrive, when Jesus comes. Even before it is finished, he will come.
Therefore the service of the Word, and the Apostolic mission are placed under Christ’s coming again. That is the encouragement that we receive in our need: The arrival of Jesus Christ. The coming of his Kingdom is near! near! near! Therefore let us be courageous and brave, even to the smallest detail, prepared for whatever is laid upon us, for the time is near.
We will praise God for this, and ask Him for true humility and endurance of simplicity, and the endowing of the true service of the Word, not only for our servants of the Word, but for all of us, who are called to this Way.
It is of greatest importance for our servants that we are clear about the day of God. It is there to guide and prepare the service of the Word, to clear representation of the truth in the Church, and in mission. As we heard, we shall be persecuted and punished all over the earth, by men, and their tricks; but the time will soon come in which all shall be revealed. The innocence of the Church of God, and the guilt of those who are today in power, will be Shown then, everything, as it truly is before God.

Ansprache Eberhards über Matthäus 10

über das Martyrium und die Aussendung in alle Völker und Dörfer und Plätze dieses Planeten.

Der Friede Gottes als die völlige Einheit und die Liebe als die völlige Freude und die Kraft des heiligen Geistes als die Neuanrichtung seiner Gemeinde sei mit uns!
Wir sind wiederum zusammengekommen, um aus dem Wort der Wahrheit gestärkt und bevollmächtigt zu werden für die Aussendung in alle Welt und für die Aufrichtung und Erhaltung des Dienstes am Wort in unserer Mitte und für die Erweckung des wahrhaftigen Zeugnisses in der ganzen Gemeinde.
Im 10. Kapitel des Matthäus-Evangeliums und der Aussendungsrede Jesu wollen wir den nachstehenden Abschnitt lesen … bis „Fürchtet euch darum nicht vor ihnen.
Das was wir in den letzten beiden Stunden gehört und erlebt haben, ist die Voraussetzung für die Verfolgung, von der wir jetzt hören müssen.

Dieser Abschnitt der Aussendungsrede Jesu im 10. Kapitel des Matthäus-Evangeliums ist für die Diener am Wort so ganz besonders wichtig, weil uns klar gemacht wird, dass das Ideal des Heroismus nicht das Bild Jesu Christi ist. Die Bereitschaft zur Flucht entspricht durchaus nicht dem Heroen-Ideal, wie es heute Mode und gang und gebe ist. Und doch ist es der Weg der wirklichen Männlichkeit und Sachlichkeit; denn hier wird die Wahrheit verherrlicht [und gross gemacht] und jedes überflüssige Großmachen des Menschen wird vermieden. Genau so wie Jesus zu denen, die durch ihn geheilt wurden, sagte: „Ihr sollt es nicht verbreiten, dass ich euch gesund gemacht habe“, genauso will er haben, dass die Diener am Wort und seine Gemeinde nicht danach trachten sollen, berühmte Märtyrer zu werden, von denen man erzählt, was für ein wunderbares Heldentum sie im Tode erwiesen haben. Gewiss müssen sie dazu bereit sein, wirklich getötet

zu werden um des Zeugnisses willen. Aber es soll so unscheinbar wie möglich geschehen, und es soll dabei lediglich die Wahrheit vertreten werden. Nicht darauf kommt es an, dass dieser und jener den Märtyrertod erleidet. Wir lehnen es ab, dass er dann gepriesen wird. Im Gegenteil: Dadurch, dass er als Held gepriesen wird, wird die Wahrheit verkleinert. Sondern darauf kommt es an, dass die Wahrheit ungebrochen und unverändert bezeugt und vertreten wird durch den ausgesandten Diener am Wort, auch wenn er zu Tode gebracht wird, dass bis zuletzt die Wahrheit unverändert, unabgeschwächt, unübertrieben, ohne Zusätze und ohne Abschwächungen ganz klar in der Liebe vertreten wird. Und nur dadurch erhält sein Märtyrertum die Weihe: durch diese sachliche Treue und Bescheidung in dem Vertreten der Wahrheit. Das ist eine außerordentlich tiefe Lehre und nicht jeder wird es sofort fassen, dass Jesus ausdrücklich sagt: „Fliehet

von einem Land ins andere.“ Und damit hängt dann zusammen die ganze Haltung der Gemeinde.
Wenn wir keinen festen Platz haben, keinen festen Bruderhof in irgendeinem Lande haben, sondern immer bereit sein müssen zum Aufbruch, dann sind wir nicht imstande, das angelegte Vermögen immer zu erhalten und in dem Arbeitsgebiet, das wir gerade übernommen haben, eine gute Situation zu behaupten, dann werden wir auch wie Jesus den geringsten Dient zu tun bereit sein und nicht darauf achtgeben, ob wir eine besonders fruchtbare, eine besonders erfolgreiche Arbeit zu tun haben, sondern wir werden ebenso gern bereit sein, den ganzen Tag die Schuhe zu putzen oder bereit sein, einen immer neuen Platz anzunehmen. Wir werden bereit sein, in der Arbeit wie ebenso innerhalb des Gemeindedienstes zu wandern, wie wir für

unser ganzes Leben überhaupt auf der Wanderschaft sind.
Wir müssen uns klar darüber sein, dass gerade der Diener am Wort in keiner Beziehung über das hinauskommen darf, was Jesus gezeigt und wie er gelebt hat. Das wäre kein rechter Diener am Wort, der nicht aufs schwerste beleidigt worden ist, dessen Name nicht aufs schwerste geschändet worden wäre. So ist es Jesus ergangen, so muss es auch den Dienern am Wort ergehen. Umso weniger haben wir uns zu fürchten; denn wir sehen, dass wir auf dem rechten Wege sind. Und uns wird eingegeben, was wir zu tun haben. Deshalb brauchen wir keine Sorge zu haben. Wir fürchten uns nicht! Und ein Trost ist uns gegeben: Des Menschen Sohn kommt, die Stunde ist nahe, in welcher er wiederkommen wird. Wir werden mit unserer Verkündigung nicht zu Ende kommen, wir werden nicht um den ganzen Planeten

herumkommen und Jesus wird schon da sein. Unsere Wanderschaft wird reichen von Deutschland nach England, von England nach Amerika, nach Japan und Russland und zurück nach Deutschland. Während wir so auf der Wanderschaft sind, wird Jesus schon da sein, nicht für unsere kleine Bruderschaft allein, sondern für die ganze Christenheit. Es wird nicht zu Ende sein mit diesem Apostolat und der Aussendung in alle Völker. Es ist so ein kleiner Zeitabschnitt, in welchem die Gemeinde nicht einmal zu Ende gekommen ist mit den nur 2000 Millionen Menschen, mit den Erdteilen dieses kleinen Planeten. In China gibt es innere Landstriche und in Afrika Gebiete, in denen noch kein Missionar zu Worte gekommen ist. Auch wenn wir alle Missionare als Ausgesandte Jesu Christi betrachten wollen, dann wäre bis heute noch nicht diese Sendung, von der

wir heute und gestern gelesen haben, erfüllt; denn sie ist bis heute noch nicht zu allen Völkern, Dörfern und Plätzen gedrungen. Es wird nicht damit zu Ende gekommen sein und die Stunde wird eintreten, dass Jesus Christus kommt. Schon vorher, ehe das zu Ende gekommen ist, wird er kommen.
So wird denn auch hier der Dienst am Wort und die Aussendung des Apostolats unter das Kommen Jesu gestellt. Das ist die Ermutigung, die wir mitten in unserer Not erfahren: Die Ankunft Jesu Christi, das Kommen seines Reiches! Es ist nahe, nahe, nahe. Darum lasst uns mutig und tapfer sein und für den kleinsten Posten und alles, was uns aufgetragen ist, bereit sein; denn die Zeit ist nahe!
Dafür wollen wir Gott anbeten und ihn bit-

ten um die wahre Demut und Duldmut dieser Schlichtheit und Bescheidung des wirklichen Dienstes am Wort, und nicht nur für unsre Diener am Wort, nicht nur für unsre eingesetzten Brüder, sondern für alle, die wir berufen sind zu dem Wege.
