Unity Must Be Renewed Daily
Gemeindestunde (fragment) at the Alm Bruderhof, 17 July 1934
...We have been shown two things: that we must watch and wait for the Spirit, but also that the Spirit wants us to call upon him. Among our Hutterian brothers, the primary concern of each of their prayers every morning and every evening is that the Spirit--the Holy Spirit--might come upon the church to fulfill all [requests] and set everything straight. Indeed, this is the most important recognition [regarding unity in the church]: without the Spirit, nothing will remain unified. Only through the Spirit and in the Spirit can unity be daily and hourly renewed.
Today, too, we should have no concern other than this: to call on the Spirit in expectant readiness and in the heartfelt longing for fulfillment--by which we mean that great happening which will have influence far beyond our personal lives, and which works independently of us to create and bring unity. It is for this that we pray.

Tägliche Erneuerung der Einheit

Gemeindestunde, Almbruderhof, 17. Juli 1934
. . . So wird uns zweierlei gezeigt: daß wir auf diesen Geist warten müssen, und daß der Geist gerufen werden will. Es ist bei unseren Brüdern die man die Hutterischen nennt jeden Tag, jeden Abend, bei jeder Anrufung das Hauptanliegen, daß der Geist, der der heilige Geist ist, auf die Gemeinde komme und alles erfülle und alles aufrichte. Und es ist in der Tat die wichtigste Erkenntnis, daß ohne diesen Geist nichts in Einheit bestehen kann und nur durch diesen Geist und in diesem Geist die Einheit täglich und stündlich neu wird.
So können wir auch heute kein anderes Anliegen haben als in dieser wartenden Bereitschaft und in dieser aus verlangenden Herzen stammenden Bitte um die Erfüllung den Geist zu rufen, indem wir damit das große Geschehen meinen, das weit über unser persönliches Dasein hinaus eingreift, das unabhängig von uns zur Einheit wirkt und Einheit gestaltet, und darum dürfen wir bitten.
