Withdrawal and True Life

. . . you see in God the best as well as the greatest. And you seek an influence of life on yourself which you feel in your thought-world particularly in solitude.
To us the matter looks like this: Since you are unclear about the nature of the creative Spirit, therefore you are also unclear about life and about your inward acceptance of this life. You believe that you can receive this true life better if you work less and also are not always ready to work so much. We see here the basic error in your false concept. For true life is the love that gives up all its strength. And we testify that in this life we encounter God. Because of this, true life is work. Action is the sphere where we find life. You see, just because you lead such a very lonely life, that is why you must find life in the encounter with people. But if you think you would experience it better in your own quietness, in the isolation of your own errors, . . . But we say that the way to life would be by freeing yourself from this thought-world of your own through dedicated work. This cannot take place, however, until you discover something higher in dedicated work. . . the reason you have a lower opinion of work for the purpose of encountering people than you do of withdrawal into your own circles of thought-the reason lies in your over emphasis on your own ego. You place your own ego in the center of your entire world of thought. And because you basically believe for yourself and in yourself, you prefer to withdraw into quietness.
The decisive question for your life is whether there is something higher than yourself, the best in yourself, meaning your own subjective thoughts; whether there is a higher cause that goes beyond yourself, to which you can devote yourself. You are saying: Whoever wants to keep his life, he will find it.
I also want to add that I am saying this frank word to you out of deepest love and sympathy. I have seen very beloved people-and this goes back many years-who represent this point of view, and I think with horror of their fate, and so I tremble for you too. I would like to embrace you with the arms of my heart and say to you: K, stop! You believe in yourself and have rejected God!

Zurückgezogenheit und wahres Leben

..... Du siehst in Gott sowohl das Beste wie das Grösste. Und du suchst eine Einwirkung des Lebens auf dich, die du in der Einsamkeit besonders empfindest in deiner Gedankenwelt.
Und uns erscheint die Sache so: Weil du unklar bist über das Wesen des schaffenden Geistes, deshalb bist du auch unklar über das Leben und über dein inneres Aufnehmen dieses Lebens. Du glaubst, dass du dieses wahre Leben besser aufnehmen kannst, wenn du weniger arbeitest und auch nicht immer bereit bist so viel zu arbeiten. Wir sehen darin einen Grundirrtum deiner Irrauffassung. Denn das wahre Leben ist die Liebe, die all ihre Kraft daran gibt. Und wir bezeugen, dass wir in diesem Leben Gott begegnen. Deshalb ist die Arbeit das wahre Leben. Die Tat ist das Gebiet, auf dem wir das Leben finden. Du siehst, gerade darum, weil du ein so sehr einsames Leben führst, deshalb musst du in der Begegnung mit den Menschen das Leben finden. Aber wenn du in deiner eigenen Stille, in der Absonderung deiner eigenen Verirrungen denkst, dann würdest du es besser erleben ... Wir sagen aber, der Weg zum Leben wäre der, dass du von dem Drehkreis deiner eigenen Gedankenwelt befreit würdest durch die hingebende Arbeit. Aber das kann erst dann geschehen, wenn du in der hingebenden Arbeit etwas Höheres entdeckst ... der Grund warum du die Arbeit zur Begegnung mit den Menschen geringer einschätzt als die Zurückgezogenheit in deine eigenen Gedankenkreise, der Grund liegt darin, dass du dein eigenes Ich überbetonst. Du stellst dein eigenes Ich in den Mittelpunkt deiner ganzen Gedankenwelt. Und weil du im Grunde für dich selbst glaubst und an dich selbst glaubst, willst du dich lieber in die Stille zurückziehen.

Die entscheidende Frage deines Lebens ist die, ob es etwas Höheres gibt als dich selbst, als das Beste in dir, als das subjektiv Gedachte in dir; ob es eine höhere Sache gibt, die noch über dich hinausgeht und an die du dich hingibst. Du sagst: Wer sein Leben erhalten will, der wird es finden.
Und ich darf noch hinzufügen, dass ich dir dieses offene Wort aus innerster Liebe und Anteilnahme sage. Ich habe sehr lieb gewordene Menschen gesehen, schon seit vielen Jahren, die diese Thesen vertreten und ich denke mit Schaudern an ihr Schicksal und so zittere ich auch um dich. Und ich möchte dich mit den Armen meines Herzens umfangen und dir sagen: K., halte ein, du glaubst an dich und hast Gott verworfen!
