What is Righteousness

It is not correct ideology, the right political party, nor decisive moralistic efforts that lead to true righteousness. God alone can bring the righteousness of a warm, loving heart, not a legalistic justice but the liberating spirit of Jesus. This article appeared in Das Neue Werk in 1920.

It was toward the end of World War I that Eberhard Arnold concluded that participation in war or violence of any kind was irreconcilable with a Christian life. But speaking and writing against militarism was not enough; his convictions led him to community – an opportunity to live the Sermon on the Mount, to live in love and brotherhood. “Reconciliation” was not an isolated compartment of his life. It was an integral part of his whole life’s witness.
